FAQ

Questions about becoming a doula

Everything you need to know about starting your doula journey.

No! Doulas are non-medical support professionals. While some doulas come from nursing or healthcare backgrounds, many come from completely different fields. What matters most is your passion for supporting families, empathy, and willingness to learn.

Most people complete their training in 3-6 months. The training workshop itself is typically 2-4 days. After that, you'll need to attend births (usually 3-5) and complete paperwork before receiving certification. Working with TBC, you can start attending births with mentor support immediately after training.

Doula income varies based on location, experience, and how many clients you take. In the Bay Area, doulas typically charge $1,200-$2,500 per birth. With TBC, Community Doulas receive 80% of the contract fee. Many doulas work part-time alongside other careers.

Absolutely! While personal birth experience can be valuable, it's not required. Many excellent doulas have never given birth themselves. What matters is your ability to provide compassionate, evidence-based support.

This is where community support matters. At TBC, we have a backup network so you're never alone. If you can't attend a birth, a qualified backup doula steps in. This reduces stress and allows for better work-life balance.

TBC provides client referrals, mentorship, backup support, and handles administrative tasks like contracts and payments. You focus on supporting families while we handle the business side. Many doulas find this especially valuable when starting out.

We accept doulas trained through DONA, CAPPA, ProDoula, and equivalent programs. DONA is considered the gold standard, but all major certifying organizations provide quality training. We can help you choose based on your location and learning style.
