Common questions from doulas
Everything you need to know about joining as a Community Doula.
We accept doulas who are certified through DONA, CAPPA, ProDoula, or equivalent programs. If you're currently completing your certification, you can apply and join while finishing—our mentorship program is especially valuable for newer doulas.
You receive 80% of every contract fee. For a typical $1,500 birth, you'd earn $1,200. We handle client acquisition, contracts, invoicing, and payment processing. Payments are processed within 14 days of receiving client payment.
Client flow depends on your availability, location, and preferences. You tell us your capacity, and we match you accordingly. Most Community Doulas take 2-4 births per month, but you can take more or fewer based on your goals.
You'll be paired with an experienced Mentor Doula for 1:1 guidance. This includes regular check-ins, on-call support during births (you can text/call your mentor during challenging situations), birth debriefs, and professional development guidance.
Yes! Many of our doulas maintain their own private practice alongside TBC clients. We just ask for transparency about your capacity so we can match appropriately and ensure you're not overcommitted.
Our backup network has you covered. If you're sick, have a scheduling conflict, or are already at another birth, we coordinate backup support. You'll introduce backup doulas to your clients prenatally so the handoff is smooth.
After gaining experience and demonstrating excellent client care, you can apply to become a Mentor Doula. This typically requires 3+ years of experience and strong reviews. Mentor Doulas earn commission on their mentees' births.
We currently serve the greater Bay Area including Oakland, San Francisco, Berkeley, San Jose, and surrounding communities. We're always looking to expand our coverage areas with committed doulas.
