Why doulas help with all birth types

Epidural births

Positioning still matters, emotional support is crucial, and someone needs to advocate for you while you rest.

C-section births

Major surgery is emotionally intense. Your doula provides support before, during (when possible), and after.

Inductions

Inductions can be long. Having continuous support and coping strategies makes the wait more manageable.

VBAC attempts

Extra emotional support and advocacy can help you navigate a VBAC attempt with confidence.

Birth Stories

What parents say about birth support

Real stories from families who had doula support during labor and delivery.

Having my doula by my side during labor was the best decision I made. She knew exactly what I needed before I did. The hip squeezes during contractions were literally lifesaving.

First-time Mom • Oakland, CA

I wanted an unmedicated birth and wasn't sure I could do it. My doula helped me through each contraction with different techniques. I did it, and I felt so powerful.

Natural Birth • San Francisco, CA

Even though I had an epidural, my doula was invaluable. She helped me change positions, advocated for me with the nurses, and was there emotionally throughout. Don't think doulas are only for "natural" births.

FAQ

Questions about birth support

Everything you need to know about having a doula at your birth.

Your doula provides phone/text support during early labor, helping you know when to head to your birth location. She joins you in active labor and stays continuously through delivery and 1-2 hours postpartum.

Absolutely! Epidurals don't eliminate the need for emotional support, positioning help, advocacy, or partner support. Many clients with epidurals report that doula support was still invaluable for navigating labor, pushing, and the emotional journey.

Your doula supports you through whatever birth unfolds. For planned or unplanned C-sections, she provides emotional support, helps you understand what's happening, and (when permitted) can often be in the OR with you.

Never! A doula enhances your partner's involvement. She guides your partner on techniques, gives them breaks when needed, and helps them feel confident rather than helpless. Most partners report feeling MORE involved with a doula present.

Your doula is prepared for any timeline. For long labors, she has backup arrangements to ensure continuous support. For fast labors, she's on-call and ready to meet you wherever needed.

Yes! Doulas are welcome at all Bay Area hospitals as part of your birth support team. We're familiar with the protocols at each facility and work collaboratively with medical staff.

During pushing, your doula provides encouragement, helps you find effective positions, offers cool cloths, reminds you to rest between contractions, and supports your partner. She's your dedicated cheerleader.

Your doula stays for 1-2 hours after birth, supporting skin-to-skin bonding, initial breastfeeding, and making sure you're comfortable and cared for before she leaves.
