Your first prenatal visit is a significant milestone in your pregnancy journey. This appointment, typically scheduled around 8-10 weeks, sets the foundation for your prenatal care and establishes an important relationship with your healthcare provider.

When to Schedule Your First Visit

Most healthcare providers recommend scheduling your first prenatal appointment around 8 weeks after your last menstrual period. However, if you have any concerning symptoms or a high-risk pregnancy history, your provider may want to see you sooner.

What to Expect

Your first visit will likely be one of your longest appointments. Here's what typically happens:

Medical History Review

Your provider will ask detailed questions about your medical history, including:

  • Previous pregnancies and outcomes
  • Chronic health conditions
  • Current medications and supplements
  • Family medical history
  • Lifestyle factors

Physical Examination

A comprehensive physical exam may include checking your weight, blood pressure, heart, lungs, and a pelvic exam. Your provider may also perform or order an ultrasound to confirm your due date and check for fetal heartbeat.

Lab Work

Blood and urine tests help establish baseline health information and screen for various conditions. Common tests include blood type, Rh factor, anemia screening, and immunity to certain infections.

Questions to Ask

Come prepared with questions! Consider asking about:

  • What prenatal vitamins do you recommend?
  • Are there foods I should avoid?
  • What symptoms should prompt me to call?
  • What is your approach to labor and delivery?
  • How do you feel about birth plans?

How a Doula Can Help
