Preparing your home for a new baby is exciting but can feel overwhelming. Here's a practical guide to help you focus on what really matters and let go of the rest.

The Essentials (Week One Needs)

Before baby arrives, make sure you have:

  • A safe sleep space (crib, bassinet, or pack-n-play)
  • Car seat (installed and checked)
  • Diapers and wipes
  • Basic clothing (onesies, sleepers, hats)
  • Feeding supplies (nursing supplies or bottles)
  • Burp cloths and receiving blankets

Creating a Feeding Station

Wherever you'll feed baby most often, set up a comfortable spot with:

  • Supportive seating with arm support
  • Good lighting (with dimmer for night feeds)
  • Water bottle and snacks within reach
  • Phone charger
  • Burp cloths and extra clothing nearby
  • Nursing pillow if breastfeeding

The Nursery: Nice But Not Necessary

A beautiful nursery is lovely but most newborns sleep in their parents' room initially. Focus on:

  • Safe sleep setup (firm mattress, fitted sheet only)
  • Changing area with supplies
  • Storage for clothing and diapers
  • Soft lighting option

Meal Prep and Pantry Stocking

Postpartum nutrition matters! Prepare by:

  • Freezing meals in the weeks before your due date
  • Stocking easy snacks (nuts, cheese, fruit)
  • Setting up grocery delivery services
  • Organizing a meal train with friends/family

Postpartum Recovery Supplies

Don't forget about your own needs:

  • Peri bottle and postpartum pads
  • Comfortable, nursing-friendly clothing
  • Sitz bath supplies
  • Stool softeners
  • Comfortable underwear

What You DON'T Need Right Away

  • Baby shoes (they don't walk yet!)
  • Elaborate nursery decor
  • Every baby gadget advertised
  • Newborn-sized clothing in excess
  • Baby food or feeding chairs

Baby-Proofing Timeline

You don't need to baby-proof everything before birth. A rough timeline:

  • Before birth: Smoke detectors, safe sleep space
  • 3-4 months: Start planning mobility safety
  • 5-6 months: Complete baby-proofing before crawling

How Your Doula Can Help

Not sure what you really need? Your doula can help you sort through the noise and focus on what will actually support your family in those early weeks.
